Every child should have access to a quality education, regardless of ability to pay.

Put Education First is where teachers, principals, support staff and parents and the Australian Education Union come together.

Victoria has been the lowest-funded state for public schools on a per student basis for of the past ten years. Literacy and numeracy coaches, welfare support, secondary and primary curriculum, school support staff, and Koori support have been cut, just to name just a few.

Victorian schools need long term funding certainty so they can plan programs and address learning gaps. The State Government’s commitment to make Victoria an Education State is encouraging and welcomed across school communities.

But what does an Education State really mean for Victorians?

Public schools need the support of both state and federal governments to provide needs-based funding on the basis of the needs of students, so that we can ensure all Victorian children get the education they deserve.

Needs-based funding is the key to providing a school system that is both equitable and efficient.

An equitable school system has been defined as one where “differences in educational outcomes are not the result of differences in wealth, income, power or possessions”. This definition comes from the Final Report of the Expert Panel for the Review of Funding for Schooling, more commonly known as the Gonski Review (after the panel chair, David Gonski).
